W13.2 May 31 (Friday)——Experiencing a Non-Technology Life: Reflections and Insights

In an era where modern technology, such as computers, smartphones, and the internet, permeates every aspect of our daily lives, I recently had the opportunity to embark on a unique journey—living an entire day without using any technological products from the 20th and 21st centuries. This experience proved to be not just a challenge but also a profound journey of introspection. Implementation Process I chose a Friday for this experiment, deliberately avoiding the use of computers, smartphones, and the internet as much as possible. In the morning, after preparing my own breakfast, I dedicated myself to cleaning the house without any electronic distractions. Achieving a spotless home gave me a deep sense of satisfaction. Subsequently, I spent the day quietly studying Korean vocabulary and grammar, indulging in a book I had long wanted to read. For lunch, I prepared a hearty meal for myself and later went for a leisurely walk with a friend, followed by an enjoyable card game session upon

5/31- Technology assignment - What did you do? What did you learn? Was it fun? -        Each spent a day restricting a different skill. We divided the limited technology into 3 parts. I took part of digital payments, so I didn’t use digital payment systems for a day. -        In here, I learned digital payments are vital technology, especially for sick people. Also, I knew it was very effective technology in terms of time and cost. -        It was fun for me to take a day with limit of digital payments. Its because I can use electronic devices only except digital payments. It means I can use online shopping, so I could see my ideal items, but I couldn’t pay it… so it was very irritated day but also a funny day. I think it can be common if we didn’t divided the section of limited technology.

Classroom Questions MAY.31

Q:Think about what we have seen in the documentary today. What can we learn about how everyday life has changed in the last ~100 years? What was surprising or interesting in today's segment? A:In the documentary, men use razors to shave, but it is easy to get hurt. Now technology allows men to use razors to better protect their skin. I was surprised that there were birthday cakes in the past. I thought there were no cakes 100 years ago. But now the cakes are better looking and have more flavors.

Q.. Day in life of a teenager in Ancient Rome. What is similar to our lives? What is different?  In the video, I can see a teenager's daylife in Ancient Rome.  [similar] The boy named Lucius lived in an apartment which are crammed in. Smelling smoke and ash is common things. The girl who lived in South Korea is also lived in an apartment that are crammed in. Also, even if I lived in 12th floor, I can smell cigarette odor commonly. I was surprised at the aspect of washing body. They Enter the bath in this order. Cold, Warm, Hot. Also, they had a massage, using oil and peel off the grime. It was very similar to Korean Public bathhouse routines.  [different] Then, what can be different? In the Ancient Rome, half of children die before they reach adulthood. However, now, we can live more longer cause of medical advances. In Ancient Rome, they completed education at 17 years old and hired as a commander. However in Korea, we graduated high school at 19 years old. Also, most of students

Q1.  Day in life of a teenager in Ancient Rome(http:/  ed.ted.com/lessons/a-glimpse-of-teenage-life-in-ancient-rome-ray-laurence) What is similar to our lives? What is different?  A1.  The family plays a central role in society both in ancient Rome and today, guiding the growth and future of youth. Households in ancient Rome were controlled by the father, with boys prepared for public life and girls taught domestic chores. But in modern society, men and women are equal, and boys or girls can consciously choose what they want to do.

Q.  Day in life of a teenager in Ancient Rome: http:/ ed.ted.com/lessons/a-glimpse-of-teenage-life-in-ancient-rome-ray-laurence What is similar to our lives? What is different? A. Merchants gather to buy and sell goods, and it becomes a gathering place for people to trade and communicate. From ancient times to the present day, there have always been places for merchants to gather and sell their wares, as well as to record the history of the past and to educate and showcase it to future generations. Today, few societies remain with formalized classes, though the concept of servants may exist in a customary or hired form.  In ancient times, people were limited in what they could access or do based on their class, but in modern times, everyone is largely in control of what they want to do. Towards the end of the video, we see Lucius and his family members throwing up. At the time, the only thing they could do when they were sick was to throw up and hope that it would make them feel bette

korea nuclear

Unlike Russia and Israel, North Korea only provokes because it does not have a nuclear weapon in South Korea. North Korea gains something by demonstrating its nuclear weapons like a bank robber. That is why I think it can be maintained even if the country is poor. However, if South Korea has nuclear weapons, there is a possibility that it will turn into a corner that it can no longer obtain and cause war. Also, if South Korea makes nuclear weapons, there is a possibility that neighboring countries, Japan, will also make nuclear weapons for defense purposes

technology and influence

In the past, European countries (Britain, France, etc.) used steam engines to increase their country's productivity and influence the world with overwhelming power. In modern times, information warfare is the mainstream, so technology cannot be considered to be less influential than in the past. In the future, unmanned technology based on AI will become an important society, and the impact of technology will increase further.

W12 class question

How has the advancement of communication technology changed societal interactions? Advancements in communication technology have significantly reshaped societal interactions. In the past, communication was limited to face-to-face interactions, letters, and landline telephones. With the advent of the internet, email, social media, and instant messaging, people can now connect instantly across the globe. This has led to increased global connectivity, the ability to maintain relationships over long distances, and the rise of online communities and social networks. However, it has also introduced challenges such as decreased face-to-face interactions, the spread of misinformation, and privacy concerns. Do you think the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to increased unemployment? The rapid development of AI has the potential to lead to increased unemployment in certain sectors as machines and algorithms can perform tasks more efficiently than humans. Jobs that in

Technology and our lives: past, present and the future Q1: Do you think technolo gical capabilities determine a country's power and influence? Is it true to the past? What abo ut the future? A1:  I think military power is still important in today's world, but it is no longer the only source of influence. Countries now mainly expand their global influence through diplomatic means, cultural exports, and development assistance. Q2: Do you think that different communication mediums (technologies) evoke different responses? Is seeing something different from hearing or reading about it? Are you more likely to care about something if you see it compared to just reading about it? A2: I think different communication ideas do elicit different responses. However, visual information is usually more likely to arouse attention and emotional responses than textual information. For example, social media also relies more on visual content to attract users and stimulate interaction and parti

1.Science and technology is part of a country’s strength, but it is not entirely the determining factor. Cultural strength is also an important part of a country’s influence; The definition of "reality" today is different from that in the past. Humanity's understanding of the world has made a qualitative leap. Although many people in modern times understand the world through the Internet, such as some wild animals, we must admit that in the past, although people mostly understood the world through the naked eye Understand the world, but this understanding is limited. Many people do not even have the opportunity to see wild animals. In the future, human beings’ ability to mechanically copy reality will be more refined and closer to reality. People can expand it through the Internet as a supplement to actual experience.  2.I think different media will cause different reactions from the audience. Technology and our lives: past, present and the future Q1: Do you think technological capabilities determine a country's power and influence? Is it true to the past? What about the future? A1: I believe that technological capabilities determine the power and influence of a country. Because it enhances economic competitiveness and promotes social development. Today should be unreal to the past. It would be difficult for people in the past to imagine that we are sitting in the classroom and using multimedia to teach. People in the future may be able to study courses at home, but they will also find the current situation unreal. Technology will develop better and better.  Q.  Do You think that different communication mediums evoke   difference responses?   Is seeing something different from hearing or reading about it?   Are you more likely to care about something if you see it compared to just reading about it? Different types of media will have different reactions. I don't think it's a matter of different responses at all, just different degrees. Listening and reading stimulate the imagination on different levels. When you're reading, you're only given a description of a situation, so you have to imagine all the elements. But when you listen, you hear the speaker's voice and the immediacy of it. It's as if the situation is happening in front of me. We can also see this in the means of communication. Non-face-to-face communication includes messengers, calls, and video calls. In a messenger with only visual elements, you can't get the full picture of the person you're communicating with. But in a video call, where both

Q) Our society is shaped by technology in numerous ways. Can we think of some? A) When a new technology is formed, people become accustomed to it. For example, in the past, if we made an error on an assignment or didn't know something, we looked it up in a book. After technology developed, people searched for papers on the Internet or asked people. And these days, with the advancement of AI, we ask ChatGPT anything when doing assignments and even ask it to write a report.  In the process of doing something like this, our actions show different appearances depending on the advancement of technology. Q) Do you think that development of powerful weapons like nuclear weapons makes the world a safer place? A)  I don't think the development of powerful weapons will make the world a safer place. From primitive tribes in ancient times to modern times, the world's weapons have continued to develop, and even when World War II broke out, nuclear bombs powerful enough to destroy a coun

Q. Related to the previous question, Which 3 photos from that list you think are most impactful for you and why?   I think these 3 photos are most impactful for me. The first one is 1850s, "valley of the shadow of death". I picked this one because when I was young, I wanted to be a war correspondent. So it was quite impactful for me. When I first saw this, I was hesitated about round things. I just thought like this "Isn't that a skull?? ??" Actually, it were cannonballs.    The second one is 1860s, "The Scourged Back".  when I first saw this, I think its kinda 3D artwork like idol musicvideo. However, it was 1860s, human cannot implement those things. I finally realised that was a scar.  We saw the whipped enslaved man, actually knew the reality of slavery at that time. The last one is " Atomic Cloud Rises Over Nagasaki". I picked this one because Korea and Japan have  Diplomatic issues about nuclear.  It's a history that shouldn&#

Hanyang Erica University

Image
The conference hall, located at the main gate of Hanyang University's Erika campus, is painted in intense pink, which makes it unappropriate for the environment by itself, unlike other buildings in Hanyang University's Erika. Therefore, the exterior of the building should be painted in dark white or gray to harmonize. Hanyang University's Erika Engineering Hall 1 is composed of dull colors both inside and outside, so I think it is difficult to give a positive impression. It also feels like a "prison" due to the weak lighting.

The campus design is crucial for students' learning and living environment. Planting beautiful trees along the campus pathways not only adds natural beauty to the campus but also presents unique charm in different seasons, making this design undoubtedly outstanding. Firstly, the selection of trees is essential. Choosing tree species that are suitable for local climate and soil conditions ensures their healthy growth and presents different colors and forms in different seasons. For example, in spring, the vibrant greenery with blossoming flowers creates a picturesque scene, while in autumn, the red and yellow leaves create a breathtaking view, as if the campus is adorned with a layer of golden attire, bringing joy and tranquility to people's hearts. Secondly, planting trees not only enhances aesthetics but also improves the campus environment. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, purify the air, lower temperatures, and increase air humidity, providing a fresh and comfo

I chose a park as the location for my observations, as a park is usually a quiet, comfortable environment that provides an opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. People can relax in the park, stay away from work stress and enjoy peaceful moments. The park has a large flow of people every day. I can observe different types of people. These people may be of different age groups, social classes, cultural backgrounds and professional fields. They may show various behaviors in the park in different ways. and characteristics and responses to the environment. Through observation and combined with White's theory, I found that the design of public space has a significant impact on human social life, as well as the interactive relationship between humans and the natural environment. White believes that public space should be designed to promote social interaction and provide people with opportunities for various social activities. According to my observation, the pa

1. Visibility and accessibility Whyte’s perspective: Whyte emphasizes that the success of public spaces relies heavily on their visibility and accessibility. An obvious entrance and clear path are crucial. Map analysis: In this map, the main entrance is clearly marked and the path is intuitive, helping visitors to easily enter and navigate the park. 2. Gathering and activity areas Whyte's take: People tend to stay and move where they can see other people, he points out. Therefore, the design should encourage gathering areas with high visibility. Map analysis: The map has simple but prominent icons for rest areas and playgrounds, which are key areas that promote social interaction. 3. Simplicity and usability Whyte’s point of view: Whyte believes that the design of public spaces should be simple and intuitive, and its purpose can be understood without additional instructions. Map Analysis: The simple design of the map is consistent with this theory, avoiding too many complex element

W10.2 May 10 (Friday)——Public Observation Task: Exploring and Learning

Participating in a public observation task has been both enlightening and engaging. Our focus was on observing student behaviors in classroom settings, aiming to understand how various factors influence their interactions and learning experiences. Task Background and Methodology As a student team, we selected classrooms as our observation sites due to accessibility and the rich social interactions they offer. Here's how we approached our observation: Observation Method : Over the course of a week, we arrived half an hour before classes across different subjects. Choosing rear corner seats allowed us to comprehensively observe the entire classroom. We recorded students' seating choices and their initial engagement upon arrival. What I Learned Impact of Environment on Learning : Spacious layouts tend to foster higher student engagement, whereas dim or stuffy settings may lead to fatigue and passive learning behaviors. what did I do? I conducted observations at various locations in the park, including picnic areas, jogging trails, and green spaces. I recorded people's activities, how they interacted, and their behavioral characteristics in the park. At the same time, I noticed the characteristics of different age groups, different family structures, and different activity groups. What did I learn? Through observation and incorporating White's theory, I found that the design of public spaces has a significant impact on people's behavior. White proposed that public spaces need to have attractive features such as seating, greenery and easy access. In my observations, I found a similar phenomenon: The importance of seating and seating areas: White emphasizes the role of seating. I observed that the benches and picnic tables attracted people to gather, rest, and socialize. Natural environment and use of space: White mentioned the importance of greenery and open space. I observed that the grass

HanYang University's ERICA campus has a large area of undeveloped land, particularly the area highlighted in red circles, which features stunning mountain scenery. It could be transformed into an internal campus park. Such a park would not only provide a relaxing leisure space for students and faculty but also contribute to the beautification of the campus environment and the maintenance of ecological balance. Developing appropriate infrastructure within the park, such as trails, observation decks, seating areas, and fitness facilities, would offer students a comfortable leisure space. Emphasizing sustainable development in the park's operation and management, utilizing environmentally friendly management and maintenance practices, would reduce the consumption of natural resources and environmental pollution. Furthermore, considering the expansion of teaching facilities is essential. As a student majoring in information media, I have noticed the annual increase in new studen

Through these observations, I learned: 1.Customer behavior patterns: I discovered certain patterns or trends in how customers selected food, dining times, and interacted with others. 2.Service quality: By observing staff behavior and customer feedba

week 9.1 April 29 (MON)—MUQING

After reading chapters 6 to 11 and the appendix of White's book "Social Life in Small Urban Spaces," I found it both fascinating and challenging. The book delves deeply into various aspects of social structure, spatial layout, and community life in small cities, showcasing White's profound insights and unique perspectives on urban sociology. Firstly, White vividly portrays the social life of small cities through meticulous research and detailed descriptions. He explores not only the spatial layout and architectural forms but also social organization, cultural customs, and more, providing a comprehensive understanding of small city life. This rich depiction deepened my understanding of social life in small cities and allowed me to experience the warmth and community spirit unique to these environments. Secondly, White presents many novel and intriguing theories and viewpoints, such as those concerning the construction and utilization of social space, interpersonal

5,10 school design

Image
I think Erica campus is well designed, first of all, there are many roads in the school, you can easily go from anywhere you want to go to the building, the school also has a lot of green belts and squares for teachers and students to rest. There are many cherry blossoms planted on both sides of a road.During the cherry blossom season, many students stop here to enjoy the flowers and take pictures. The school is close to the natural park, so the environment is very good. The dormitory section will also be relatively quiet, suitable for rest and study, and there will be some animals here. But there are also shortcomings, for example, some teaching buildings are blocked, there is not much sunlight, the dormitory is also a little far and remote for students.

Erica campus 0510

I think the Hanyang Erica campus has a lot of unused land and space, which seems relatively empty, so I think we can design more social spaces and activity venues, such as outdoor amphitheaters, cafes, leisure areas, etc., to promote student interaction and socialization. In addition, in order to provide students with a richer and more diverse learning experience, more educational spaces can be designed, such as laboratories, study rooms, rehearsal halls, etc., to stimulate their learning interest and creativity. You can also design more comfortable and humane environments, such as suitable seats, shading facilities, green vegetation, etc., to create a pleasant campus environment so that people are more willing to stay on campus and participate in activities.

5/10 – public observation- What did you do? What did you learn? Was it fun? I observed the starfield library. We divided into 5 areas and visitor types. In this project, I could learn a lot type of people. For example I lived in suwon so I can’t see a lot of foreigners. 96% of passengers are Korean, 2% of passengers are Chinese. However, when I observed the starfield library, I could see a lot of foreigners. I think it’s a big chance to analyze foreigners in korea because it wasn’t located in seoul. The most interesting thing that I learned in this project was whyte’s theory don’t have big changes in the year 2024. It was fun because it is not common library.( only two libraries in the world.) And it was not built by government, it was built by shinsege group, directly connected to profits. So it was very interesting for me to analyze this library like why they constructed this? What was their expectation effectiveness? Additionally, it was fun because starfield library was plur

I think the design of our school is relatively good. According to White's "green space and open areas" theory. There are still these places in schools. Although the coverage of green space is relatively small. But it still provides us with such space. For example, our professional building has a design space. But apart from the smoking area you can sit and relax. Elsewhere it was standing room only. I think it would be appropriate to install some chairs. On the left side of our courtyard building. As far as I know the place on the left has been recently developed.Like the picture below. second. According to White's theory of "effective use of urban space". I think this aspect of the school is poorly designed. There are many places in the school that are deserted. Not very well designed. And the space utilization is not good. For example, in front of the basketball court. Today it is all covered with dirt. But there are a few chairs. But the environment is no

Many people will sit and chat around there. Because people like places with water, for example, many people like to take walks by the river, which makes them feel relaxed. How to make the fountain swimming pool better? We believe that the location of the fountain pool can be a bit far from the school gate. If people want to go here to relax, they need to walk a distance, which is not very convenient. And there is a lack of a restaurant or cafe nearby that can enjoy the beautiful water pool while eating, and the space is not fully utilized. Negative aspects The dormitory of the school is too far from the main entrance, and there is not enough food and entertainment nearby. The school is also covered with a lot of trees and plants. The newly renovated small park next to our college just opened yesterday has many seats for students to rest and watch. The school also has a large fountain pool with sunshine, trees and water, which not only enhances the beauty of the campus, but also provides students with a better learning and living environment. The school also has a main street and many paths that are accessible to all areas. Enable students, faculty, staff, and visitors to reach their destinations easily and quickly. In order to make the campus better, I think the school can also provide a rich and diverse social space, so that students can communicate and interact freely on cam
