Project 2 - extra credit 2023079825 kimseoeun

5/10 – public observation- What did you do? What did you learn? Was it fun?

I observed the starfield library. We divided into 5 areas and visitor types.

In this project, I could learn a lot type of people. For example I lived in suwon so I can’t see a lot of foreigners. 96% of passengers are Korean, 2% of passengers are Chinese. However, when I observed the starfield library, I could see a lot of foreigners. I think it’s a big chance to analyze foreigners in korea because it wasn’t located in seoul. The most interesting thing that I learned in this project was whyte’s theory don’t have big changes in the year 2024.

It was fun because it is not common library.( only two libraries in the world.)

And it was not built by government, it was built by shinsege group, directly connected to profits. So it was very interesting for me to analyze this library like why they constructed this? What was their expectation effectiveness?

Additionally, it was fun because starfield library was plural place, so we don’t have answers. (Different observation result with other public spaces) It’s not that easy to analyze because there are too many types of visitors, other areas…etc.

Also, It was perfect place to observe people. I think it’s a proper place to a apply whyte’s theory. In front of that, we can analyze the big shopping mall’s effect to street. To explain specifically, starfield library was constructed in 2024, and it was free opened to everyone. So it was very meaningful observation report that reflected the newest trend and fashion-conscious visitors.
