Reading:Wikipedia : Reliable sources While scholarly publications, authoritative media, and expert commentary are generally considered reliable sources, Wikipedia also considers non-traditional sources, such as blogs or self-published material, depending on their citation and quality. This reflects the openness and flexibility of the Wikipedia community to information and their constant attempts to adapt to different content and sources. In the movie " The Sting ", the following is my analysis combined with Goffman's theory. Communications: The communication and interaction between characters in movies play a crucial role in formulating and executing scams. The protagonists convey information through verbal communication, code signals, hints, and other means, and use techniques such as code words and behavioral performances to deceive and mislead others in order to achieve their goals. Treatment of the Absent: In a “The Sting”, sometimes certain people need to be exclud...

The film "Pleasantville" prompts reflection on our perceptions of truth and falsehood, blurring the lines between them and urging a deeper understanding of the world. Characters in the movie, residing in the seemingly idyllic Pleasantville yet harboring a rebellion against its constraints, leave a lasting impression by embodying both pleasure-seekers and fighters against dystopia. Goffman's theory finds vivid illustration in the film's portrayal. Positive emotions like courtesy and joy take center stage, masking the characters' deeper struggles with anxiety and disappointment, relegated to the background. This dichotomy reflects the dual nature of human existence, where outward performance often contrasts with inner turmoil. In Pleasantville, the characters navigate between front-stage performances and back-stage moments of respite. While maintaining optimistic facades in public, they retreat to the background to confront their true selves and ponder their futur...

The movie "The Sting" is a classic American crime comedy released in 1973. It tells the story of two professional con men who collaborated to carry out an elaborate scam to avenge the murder of Johnny's friend Grogan and defraud him. The vast fortune of a greedy crime boss. They devised a complex scam, posing as federal agents, and managed to trick the crime boss into believing they had inside information that would allow him to win in a fictitious gamble. Ultimately, they succeed in swindling the crime boss out of his money and ultimately avenge Grogan. In the movie "The Sting" several elements related to Goffman's social theory can be found: Performance theory (Presentation of Self): The protagonists play different roles in the movie. They need to show different behaviors and images in different situations to realize their fraud plan. They control others' impressions of themselves by acting differently in the foreground (in public) and backstage (...

"Pleasantville" is a film with deep social and cultural connotations. It explores issues such as social change, personal liberation and cultural conflict through the story of a pair of modern teenagers who are brought into a fictional 1950s town. Under the sociological theoretical framework of Erving Goffman, we can conduct an in-depth analysis of character interactions, social norms, and identity construction in movies. 1. Dramatic role performance: Role playing and identity construction in movies are closely related to Goffman's theory. In Pleasantville, the main characters are forced to play traditional 1950s roles, and they must adapt to the norms and expectations of this society. This type of role acting is a vivid reflection of what Goffman describes as "frontstage" and "backstage" behavior, where people play specific social roles in public (frontstage) and reveal their true selves in the private realm (backstage). 2. Social norms and cont...

The movie "Pleasantville" made me reflect on our perceptions of "true" and "false."In the film, the line between truth and falsehood becomes blurred and indistinguishable. This kind of thinking makes me cherish my perception more and try to see the real face of the world. Also, the characters in the movie left a deep impression on me.They are both residents of Pleasure Valley and dystopian fighters. While enjoying the comforts of Pleasure Valley, they are suspicious of existing rules and trying to find true freedom. Overall, "Pleasantville‘’ is a profound and meaningful film.It has allowed me to re-examine the way we live and the way we perceive, leading people to think deeply about the world we live in. In the movie Pleasantville , Goffman's theory is vividly demonstrated. The characters in the movie show positive emotions such as courtesy, respect, and joy in the foreground, while in the background, they may show negative emotions such as anxiety,...

The distinction between frontstage and backstage: Goffman proposed the concepts of frontstage and backstage. The frontstage refers to the place where people perform their roles and interact socially in public, while the backstage is the private space where people prepare and maintain their roles. In the movie, the protagonist is brought into a world that was originally a black and white TV series, and this world was designed to conform to the idealized state of society in the 1950s. The characters play specific roles in this virtual society. Their behavior and performance are strictly regulated in the front stage, while their inner true emotions and desires are exposed in the backstage. Impression management: Goffman focuses on how people manage their impressions through speech, behavior, and appearance to achieve specific goals. In the movie, the protagonists begin to change the original black and white world through their actions and ideas, bringing color and diversity. This change b...
