week 6.1 April 8 (MON)—MUQING

The movie "The Sting" is a classic American crime comedy released in 1973. It tells the story of two professional con men who collaborated to carry out an elaborate scam to avenge the murder of Johnny's friend Grogan and defraud him. The vast fortune of a greedy crime boss. They devised a complex scam, posing as federal agents, and managed to trick the crime boss into believing they had inside information that would allow him to win in a fictitious gamble. Ultimately, they succeed in swindling the crime boss out of his money and ultimately avenge Grogan.

In the movie "The Sting" several elements related to Goffman's social theory can be found:

Performance theory (Presentation of Self): The protagonists play different roles in the movie. They need to show different behaviors and images in different situations to realize their fraud plan. They control others' impressions of themselves by acting differently in the foreground (in public) and backstage (in private).

Impression Management: The protagonists need to manage their impressions in the minds of crime bosses and others through careful planning and performance, making them believe that they are real federal agents and have inside information. By creating illusions and projecting confidence, they successfully deceive other characters, including the audience.

Social Roles: In the fraud scheme, the protagonists played different social roles, including federal agents, gamblers, police, etc. Each character has different expectations and codes of conduct that the protagonists need to adapt to and use to achieve their goals.

Front Stage and Back Stage: The protagonists' fraud plan unfolds at both the front stage and the back stage. On the front stage, they deceive other characters and create illusions through public performances and behaviors; while behind the scenes, they plan and prepare fraud plans in private settings, showing their true selves.
