W6.1 April 8 (Mon)《Pleasantville》
The distinction between frontstage and backstage: Goffman proposed the concepts of frontstage and backstage. The frontstage refers to the place where people perform their roles and interact socially in public, while the backstage is the private space where people prepare and maintain their roles. In the movie, the protagonist is brought into a world that was originally a black and white TV series, and this world was designed to conform to the idealized state of society in the 1950s. The characters play specific roles in this virtual society. Their behavior and performance are strictly regulated in the front stage, while their inner true emotions and desires are exposed in the backstage.
Impression management: Goffman focuses on how people manage their impressions through speech, behavior, and appearance to achieve specific goals. In the movie, the protagonists begin to change the original black and white world through their actions and ideas, bringing color and diversity. This change breaks the impression management of the original characters and allows the characters to start thinking and experiencing new emotions and concepts.
Emotional expression and control: Goffman's theory also focuses on how individuals express and control their emotions during social interactions. In Pleasantville, characters may struggle to control their emotions in order to keep social interactions stable and harmonious.
