"Pleasantville" is a film with deep social and cultural connotations. It explores issues such as social change, personal liberation and cultural conflict through the story of a pair of modern teenagers who are brought into a fictional 1950s town. Under the sociological theoretical framework of Erving Goffman, we can conduct an in-depth analysis of character interactions, social norms, and identity construction in movies.

1. Dramatic role performance: Role playing and identity construction in movies are closely related to Goffman's theory. In Pleasantville, the main characters are forced to play traditional 1950s roles, and they must adapt to the norms and expectations of this society. This type of role acting is a vivid reflection of what Goffman describes as "frontstage" and "backstage" behavior, where people play specific social roles in public (frontstage) and reveal their true selves in the private realm (backstage).

2. Social norms and control: The town in "Pleasantville" is full of traditional social norms and codes of conduct. In the fictional town, residents are bound by traditional social norms and their behaviors and thoughts are restricted to fixed patterns. However, with the intervention of the main characters, this bondage was broken, and people began to question and challenge traditional concepts and pursue personal liberation and self-realization. This contrast between social norms and personal liberation echoes Goffman's theory of personal freedom versus social control, reflecting the power dynamics in society and the behavioral choices of individuals. This is related to Goffman's theory of "individual freedom and social control". He pointed out that society's regulation and control of individual behavior is achieved through various social institutions and rules.

3. Cultural conflict and personal liberation: "Pleasantville" explores the relationship between personal liberation and cultural conflict through the experiences of the main characters. With the emergence of modern ideas, the residents of the small town are faced with the redefinition of traditional identities and roles, as well as the challenge of their own positioning and identity in society. This kind of social change and cultural conflict triggered the reconstruction of personal identity and social identity, presenting Goffman's theoretical perspective on personal identity construction and social interaction.

"Pleasantville" presents a profound and inspiring story through Goffman's sociological theoretical framework. In this film, Goffman's theory is masterfully used to help the audience understand the complex interactions that societies and individuals experience in the face of cultural change and identity construction.
