The movie "Pleasantville" made me reflect on our perceptions of "true" and "false."In the film, the line between truth and falsehood becomes blurred and indistinguishable. This kind of thinking makes me cherish my perception more and try to see the real face of the world.
Also, the characters in the movie left a deep impression on me.They are both residents of Pleasure Valley and dystopian fighters. While enjoying the comforts of Pleasure Valley, they are suspicious of existing rules and trying to find true freedom.
Overall, "Pleasantville‘’ is a profound and meaningful film.It has allowed me to re-examine the way we live and the way we perceive, leading people to think deeply about the world we live in.
In the movie Pleasantville , Goffman's theory is vividly demonstrated. The characters in the movie show positive emotions such as courtesy, respect, and joy in the foreground, while in the background, they may show negative emotions such as anxiety, anger, and disappointment.
In Pleasantville, we can see everyone struggling with the foreground. For example, when facing the difficulties of life, the protagonists always maintain an optimistic and strong attitude and show the outside world a positive image. In this way, they gain the respect and recognition of others and gain more life opportunities for themselves. In addition, there are some symbolic symbols and scenes in the film, such as singing and dancing, which are important means for characters to perform in the foreground.
While front-stage performances are very important to the characters, back-stage breaks can't be ignored either. In the movie, we can see the characters relaxing and resting in the background, which is a critical moment for them to regain their energy and adjust their state. In the background, they can show their true selves and think about their lives and futures without interference from the outside world. This back-and-forth transformation not only makes the characters more three-dimensional and vivid, but also makes the storyline more compact and interesting.
For example, in the movie, the protagonist David is at the carnival in Pleasantville and he has to maintain a happy, excited front-office behavior to suit the atmosphere of the occasion. However, when he is alone in the background, he may show feelings of exhaustion, loneliness, and even disappointment.
This switching between front and backstage is not only a personal choice of characters, but also a reflection of social expectations and role expectations. They have to show behavior in the foreground that is consistent with social expectations, while in the background they can relax a little and show their true selves.
