Project One: Interaction Observation's record-ZHANG QI

This is my project one. Next, I will explain in detail why and how I completed this assignment.

Observe the interaction:

On a normal evening, a young man is having a phone conversation with someone via a hand-held smartphone, and his expression looks a little less than favourable, probably dealing with some urgent matter. At this point, however, his behaviour attracts a nearby young man. This man seemed to be interested in the content of his phone conversation. Immediately, the man then handed the man on the phone his own cigarette. However, although the man on the phone did not know who the man was and for what purpose he was offering him a cigarette, he took the cigarette in the context of the phone call.

Explanation:Firstly, based on Goffman's theory, I attempted to search for examples around me. However, this is not a simple task because I find this example relatively difficult to find, as everyone will look for a few examples that are usually thought of by everyone, so I started brainstorming. Based on the curious questions I encounter in my daily life, I suddenly came up with an inspiration: why do people accept things that others give you without hesitation when they talk on the phone, regardless of the content of the conversation. Based on this idea, I created a small story.

Analyse the interaction:

In this interaction, the man on the phone plays the role of the receiver and the strange man is the giver. The man may have chosen the bar as a place to relax because he was not satisfied with the content of the conversation. His expression is not good, probably because of the unpleasantness of the telephone exchange. The strange man chooses to hand him cigarettes at this time, perhaps because he feels the caller needs to relieve his boredom or out of kindness. The man accepted the cigarette and showed gratitude, a behaviour that could have been motivated by politeness or concern for others.

Explain this interaction through Goffman's concepts of role and area manipulation. The man played the role of receiver when he chatted with the unfamiliar man in the bar, his behaviour was influenced by the environment of the bar and he may have wished to relax or find some way to unwind. The strange man, on the other hand, was the provider, choosing the right moment to offer help after observing the caller's expression. This interaction took place in a social place such as a bar, and the man may have chosen to accept the cigarette in consideration of the stares of those around him.

Of course there is another possibility, and this one is what I have come up with from my observations as I go along with my daily life: if a man is on the phone, he will catch anything that is offered to him when he is in an emotional state. I used to get a lot of leaflets while I was on the phone, all of which were done unconsciously.

This scenario highlights how people interact socially in a particular situation and how they act out different roles in social situations. It also demonstrates people's sensitivity to the needs of others and their willingness to respond positively to the needs of others.

Explanation: Based on one's own understanding of Goffman, try to analyze the details of this story. I am also trying to explain some of the proprietary terms mentioned in the book. And after explaining it, I asked AI for their opinion on my explanation, and ultimately made two revisions. During the editing process, I found that there were still many misunderstandings about my understanding of Goffman. However, after the final revisions, I re edited the format of the article and uploaded the final article on LMS.
