Given Questions On March 8th Class

March 8th class (1st week) - what is sociology? comparison to other sciences ...

These two following questions are professor gave us march 8th class.

During class, we were lack of time, so I'm gonna write my opinion in this blog.

1. What is more important: the actions of individuals or the environment that influences them?

I think the actions of individuals is more important. Environment can provide a big picture but not directly impact on our life in this 21th century. I guess there are two reasons.

First of all, society change over time; flood of information and rampant individualism. Previous society was lack of information (especially education, language, writing aspect), so they are more influenced by the environment. Specifically, citizens don't know how to write, read. However, now we lives in "flood of information age". Individuals can freely use information, they can act personally, independently. (not rely on someone)

Secondly, individuals' lives are directly connect to whole society. For example, when we focus on the individuals, we can easily establish a welfare policies. As individuals’ lives get better, it can bring a positive impact on whole society.

In conclusion, these are two biggest reason why i think individuals' actions is more important. Additionally, I am interested in online interactions because I think it is the biggest contributor to our rampant individualism society.

2. Let’s look at the following pictures and try to answer:

how do those people feel?

Why did they act the way they do?

What can we learn from answering those questions?

I think those people are all look unhappy. Some looks emotionless(homeless, worker and two monks) and others look professional in their role( a prayer women, reenactor, performer and soldiers).

I guess they act that way to taking a picture. They just act like stereotypcial image of their role. For example, there is a scary and hard stereotype about soldiers. We think factory worker is unhappy. Also, we have some stereotypes about not only jobs but also countries. Looking at a boy in Mauritania, he have no clothes on, holding a raw fish with his mouth. It means Mauritania which located in Africa, has an poor image.

While I'm answering those questions, I can guess how do i act when I'm in their role. Maybe I'm gonna trying my best if photographer give me a pay. Moreover, I am wondering whether those people are actors or not. Through this activity, we can learn how to understand others. Understanding is important cause it is the foundation when we interacts. Interactions is the easiest method of understanding the complexity and diversity of society. So i think understanding and interactions influence each other.
