《THE PRESENTATION OF SELF IN EVERYDAY LIFE》BOOK REVIEW

  After reading Goffman's book "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life", I compiled the following content.

 "Society" only exists when we perform.
 People perform through symbols in order to win the recognition of the audience.

> A dramatic look at everyday life.

 compare social life to drama
-> Performance allows people to better define realistic situations.
-> Performances allow members of society to gain more benefits.

> How actors perform.

-> Carefully built stage. Divided according to function: front stage and backstage.
-> A team that works together. Together they maintain the context established by the performance.
-> Actor. Image management. (idealization, expression control, misleading, mystify)

> Remediation of performance problems.

-> Cause of the problem
--> Actor's unintentional mistake
      Actor gets into trouble
      Audience breaks in
      Intentional destruction

 The defined situation is destroyed

-> Multiple firewalls
--> Take preventive measures
      Take protection and isolate the background
      Clever remedy, "joint" performance

 Drama is a "scaffolding" used to understand social life.
 But eventually we have to return to reality.

-----------------------------------------------------------
 I think this is a very interesting book. With a unique perspective, he introduced the concept of drama into sociological analysis, observed the details of interpersonal interactions in daily life, and used the language of drama stage to vividly describe people's daily life behaviors.
 I think this is a very good book. It triggered my thinking and made me start to pay attention and observe the small details in life.
 People post updates on social platforms, like, forward, and perform various performances on this front stage. What happens in real life is backstage. However, many people edit their real life into text and pictures one by one, and publish them after careful processing.
Their activities in real life are also affected by the front stage performance: take pictures first when eating, then retouch the pictures after taking them, and then retouch them after the photos are taken. The picture must be accompanied by text and location and sent before you can start eating. While eating, you must also pay attention to your own dynamic likes.
Real life space is constantly being squeezed, and the boundaries between the front stage  and backstage are constantly blurring. And personal performance at the front stage seems to be more malleable. We can use various means and technologies to create a personality for ourselves. After all, in the anonymous environment of the Internet, no one knows what you are like in real life.
 Maybe you don’t leave home in life, but you can build yourself into a globe-trotting backpacker by posting photos of beautiful scenery around the world; maybe you are a “social phobia” who doesn’t like to interact with people in life, but You can actively participate in community interactions on social media platforms and build yourself into a "social expert". You can be anything you want.
 The article also mentioned a lot of social roles, which was not easy to understand in the article at first. I solved this difficulty through the professor's explanations in class and the students' stories.
