Given Questions Of March 15th (4th class)

 1. What can we learn from a breaching experiment.

Through the breaching experiment, we can learn the way people perceive others. Observing the reaction, we can guess and ask why people act that way. We can see this breaching experiment frequently in Youtube. We can classify diverse people into groups by gender, generation, exposed environment. We can predict each group’s tendency and where the tendency comes from. I think this analysis is important in sociology.

2.  Imagine you and your family are throwing a party for your family friends in your house. What are the stages? (I already answered in class but I compensate based on professor’s advice)

I think the front stage is the kitchen. In the front stage, we are trying to make a new friends so I need some acting. In other words, we are trying to influence others. For example, we will act like close-knit family, even we have conflicts with our family. Kitchen is the place where the most conversations are happpening. This is the reason why I choose kitchen is the front stage. However, kitchen can also be a backstage before the party start. Its because we are just preparing for the party, preparing represents the backstage. During party time, i can be little tired, i need some rest in my room. I can act more truthfully, not hiding who I am in my room because I am alone. So I think the boundary is the my room’s door.

3. Using the last example(family party), what are the teams? (More than 2 groups)

Using the last example, I just devided into 4 groups.

1. Parents group(my parents, parent’s friends, my friend’s parents)

 2. Child group(daughters and sons)

3. Preparing group(me and my family)

 4. Guest group(all except me and my  family)

I seperate the group for a generation difference, because i think this difference mainly influence to the conversation themes. For example, in child’s group, most of children act it polite in the front stage(reason is that they are together with parents group) because we are in the Korea society(oriental characteristics).  Especially when parents’ start to drink, the child group tend to leave the front stage. So we are together in the backstage(maybe it can a room), just talking about celebrities, their friends and the online contents, games.(their interesting fields) I think the child group has the similarity in the section of interesting fields. Even if the child is an adult, they are tend to leave the kitchen, because it’s not comfortable position.(its because we have to act it polite). Goffman said that we can be a team in the backstage. Teams are together in the front stage and back stage, so each group has similarity. Additionally, I guess when they are with their teams, they feel more comfortable since they have similar concerns.(in parents group, they have child concerns in common) 1st group and 2nd group’s border line is the door of room.

In case of 3rd group and 4th group, me and my family are together in the backstage(kitchen). We prepare the party food and decorate the home. Guest group are together in the backstage(it can be their home, vehicles). Its because they are not yet in the front stage. So they can step out of character without fear of disrupting the performance. Also, they are preparing for gift (meaning of housewarming gifts or potluck party). In other words, they are preparing for the front stage, so they are together in the backstage. In 3rd group and 4th group, its boundary is the door of my home.
